Asian Games gold medalist Pinki Pramanik has been granted bail by a court North 24 Parganas district after a 25 days judicial custody today.
The bail was granted by the Barasat court to Pramanik, whose chromosome pattern test report to determine her gender was received by the SSKM Hospital on Monday.
Pramanik was arrested on June 14 after she was accused of being male by her 30 year old live-in partner and a single mother of one. She has also alleged that she was raped by Pramanik.
A PIL was moved in the Calcutta High Court on July 6, 2012 alleging inhuman torture on the athlete.
The court has directed the West Bengal government to file an affidavit within two weeks on the progress of the investigation.
The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WB-HRC) has also stepped in and directed the home, health and police departments to inquire into the allegations of torture on the athlete in police and jail custody.
Pramanik had won the 4x400m relay gold in the 2006 Doha Asiad and silver in the same event at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Pramanik had also bagged three gold medals in the 2006 SAF Games in Colombo when she won the 400m, 800m and 4x400m relay events.
I do not understand one thing here. Why should anyone resist a gender test? Especially, when it is very critical to the case. It is mandatory to do the test as it will be the primary evidence. I guess, then the cops have to forcibly do it. But they should have produced her in a court of law if she had resisted the test and should have done the test under the court's direction. Then she/he may not be able to resist the test legally.
