"Gandhi: Naked Ambition" book on Gandhi's Sex life

Unusual sex life of Mohandass Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) had created chaos in 2010 as a book titled- Gandhi: Naked Ambition” claimed him a “most dangerous, semi-repressed sex maniac". Indian Government is still silent on the issue.

The writer of the book Jad Adam, who is a historian working as an author and independent television producer in London, claims Gandhi not only had a practice of sleeping next to naked girls, but that he spoke constantly of sex and gave detailed, often provocative, instructions to his followers as to how they might best observe chastity.

Jad goes on to add that Gandhi's friend and the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, described Gandhi's advice to newly-weds to stay celibate for the sake of their souls, as 'abnormal and unnatural'.

The book quotes the pre-independence Prime Minister of the Indian state of Travancore having described him as 'a most dangerous, semi-repressed sex maniac'.

The book claims that as Gandhi's father lay dying, he left his bedside to have sex with his wife Kasturba.

It further states that as Gandhi grew older (and following Kasturba's death) he was to have more women around him and would oblige women to sleep with him whom – according to his segregated ashram rules – were forbidden to sleep with their own husbands.

Meanwhile, it seemed that challenging times required greater efforts of spiritual fortitude, and for that, more attractive women were required: Sushila, who in 1947 was 33, was now due to be supplanted in the bed of the 77-year-old Gandhi by a woman almost half her age. While in Bengal to see what comfort he could offer in times of inter-communal violence in the run-up to independence, Gandhi called for his 18-year-old grandniece Manu to join him – and sleep with him. "We both may be killed by the Muslims," he told her, "and must put our purity to the ultimate test, so that we know that we are offering the purest of sacrifices, and we should now both start sleeping naked."

Eighteen-year-old Abha, the wife of Gandhi's grandnephew Kanu Gandhi, rejoined Gandhi's entourage in the run-up to independence in 1947 and by the end of August he was sleeping with both Manu and Abha at the same time.

This is not the first time that any book has made the startling revelations about Gandhi's sex life. Earlier, in a controversial biography of Gandhi - ''Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India'', former New York Times editor Joseph Lelyveld had tagged him as bisexual and racist.
