Mob attacks poultry farm, leaves seven lakh chicken dead

An angry mob at Korlam have attacked and stopped the power supply of a poultry farm while protesting against the unbearable odour coming from it, which had resulted in the death of about seven lakh chicken yesterday.

The loss of property is estimated to be of Rs 21 crore. The birds have died due to suffocation as the power was off for almost three to four hours.

The residents of two villages Korlam and Alajangi were agitating for past six months demanding for the closure of the poultry farm, which had been spreading stench and causing health problems among the villagers.

Hundreds of villagers, including students and women, conducted Raasta Rokos and dharnas at the Radha Sakku Agro Pharma’s poultry farm and on the main road before attacking the farm.

Agitators first stopped power supply to the farm and attacked the staffs, including DGM Sitarama Raju when they tried to switch on the generator.

The poultry management was breeding the birds in five huge air-conditioned sheds. While the poultry farm representative Harikrishna was holding talks with the villagers, the people from other village have attacked the farm.
