Crime against women: West Bengal tops the list

The people of West Bengal may not like this top position, as the records compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) have put the state on the top of the list of crimes against women.

According to the bureau’s latest report for 2011, West Bengal has accounted for nearly 12.7 per cent of the total number of crimes against women registered in India.

With the percentage of 12.4, Andhra Pradesh is trying to give a tough competition to the leading state.
If consider it as population wise, West Bengal has accounted for 7.5 percent share and Andhra Pradesh has seven percent of total share and these two states recorded at least 29,133 and 28,246 cases against women respectively.

While on the other hand, Madhya Pradesh is reported on the highest number of rape cases with around 3,406, accounting for 14.1 per cent of total such cases reported in the country.

Rape cases have been further categorized as incest rape and other.

Meanwhile, incest rape cases have decreased by 7.3 per cent from 288 cases in 2010 to 267 cases in 2011 as compared to 9.2 per cent increase in overall rape cases.

National capital Delhi has reported 17.6 per cent of rape cases, 31.8 per cent of kidnapping and abduction cases, 14.0 per cent of dowry deaths and 10.1 per cent of molestation cases among 53 mega cities, the NCRB report said.

Among 53 cities, Delhi with 4,489 cases has accounted for 13.3 per cent of total crime against women followed by Bangalore with 1,890 cases and around 5.6 per cent, Hyderabad with 1,860 cases and 5.5 per cent and Vijayawada with 1,797 cases and 5.3 per cent.

The cases of dowry deaths have increased by 2.7 per cent during 2011 over the previous year. 26.9 per cent of the total such cases reported in the country were reported from Uttar Pradesh with 2,322 cases alone followed by Bihar with 1,413 cases and about 16.4 per cent.
