CPI(M) wants non Congress candidate for Vice Presidential post

The Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) has said that the party is in favour of non Congress candidate for the post of Vice President today.

The decision was conveyed by CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had recently contacted him to seek support from the political parties for selecting a candidate in the Vice Presidential election.

Karat, who is attending the party's three-day state committee meeting, said it was now up to Congress to decide, after which CPI(M) would respond.

The decision of the CPI(M) came after Congress has hinted Hamid Ansari as its candidate  for the Vice Presidential race.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has extended its support to United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) Presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee.
