West Bengal Civic Polls: TMC wins four Municipal bodies, Left snatch Haldia

Kolkata: So called ‘ the litmus test’ of  Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Baneerjee, the results of the West Bengal civic polls held in six municipalities have slowly started coming in leaning heavily towards her favor.

Trinamool Congress has won four of the six civic bodies that were elected on Tuesday. However, the CPM held onto Haldia, which is being seen as a setback for Ms Banerjee.

Cooper's Camp, traditionally a Congress stronghold, did not break its habit. The Trinamool has won the four municipalities of Durgapur, Panskura, Nalhati and Dhupguri.

All 129 seats in the six civic bodies - Durgapur, Dhupguri, Haldia, Nalhati, Daspur and Coopers' Camp - witnessed triangular contests among the Congress, Trinamool Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front.

It should be noted that, as a reflection of their bitter rivalry, alliance partners, Trinamool and Congress fought the civic elections independently.

Congress and opposition CPI(M) alleged that the polls were far from free and fair and accused Trinamool activists of resorting to booth-capturing and rigging.
These polls are the first major elections after the 2011 Assembly polls.
