Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had been hit out hard by the Opposition over his proposal that MLAs, who do not have a car of their own should be allowed to buy a car using the State funds.
He has also maintained a budget for it that the car should notbe more than Rs.20 lakh.
Earlier addressing the assembly, Akhilesh said that the elected members should buy a car if they need it to survey development work in their constituencies.
He also said that the car can be returned to the government after five years or can be bought by the MLA at a depreciated value.
Every year an MLA's gets Rs. 1.25 crore as development funds for developing work in their constituencies.
After the decision, the fund has been increased by Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 1.5 crore.
