DA case: SC strikes down CBI probe against Mayawati

The Supreme Court (SC) today strikes down  a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) probe against Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP)  supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati in the disproportionate assets (DA) case.

The court said that the CBI should not have lodged an FIR against Mayawati as there was no direction from the court. The apex court observed that the CBI FIR was unwarranted and the central agency proceeded without understanding of its order in the Taj corridor case.

Further, the Court said that the CBI had  proceeded against Mayawati without properly understanding Court’s  order and there is no finding and no material report pertaining to the DA case against Mayawati. And added that anything beyond Taj Corridor scam was not subject matter of the court.

Former  Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Mayawati and a minister in her cabinet, Nasimuddin Siddiqui, were charged with corruption in the Taj Heritage Corridor scam (2002–2003). The Taj Corridor project was intended to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal. The then BJP government at the Centre gave the Environmental Clearance required for the project near Taj Mahal.

However, later on the BJP backed out and then started saying that the project was not cleared by the Environment Ministry and blamed Mayawati for starting construction work. The total estimated cost of the project was Rs. 175 crore.
