Cabinet reshuffle: P Chidambaram back as Finance Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde gets Home

P Chidambaram on Tuesday was given the charge of the Finance Ministry and Sushilkumar Shinde was made the Home Minister.

Corporate Minister Veerappa Moily was given additional charge of Power Ministry. The Finance Ministry was without a chief after Pranab Mukherjee resigned and went on to win the Presidential election.

Shinde came under public scrutiny after the eastern and northern electricity grids collapsed, leaving 600 million people without power.

The outage in the eastern grid came just a day the northern power grid collapsed for several hours on Monday.

Shinde, on Tuesday, accused the states of overdrawing power from the grids and causing the outage.

Triggering a major power crisis, three electricity grids connecting more than 20 states and the national capital collapsed today. While the northern grid failed for the second straight day, the eastern and north-eastern grids too collapsed. These three grids carry about 50,000 MW of electricity.

A major overhaul of both the UPA government and the Congress party organisation had been on the cards for quite some time now. But after Pranab's resignation, there was an immediate requirement of a Finance Minister and a leader of the house in the Lok Sabha.
