Assam flood worsens, over 20 lakh people displaced

The flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim, with more than 20 lakh people have been displaced and the death toll had rose sharply to 61.

Further, more than two lakh people still remains affected in Majuli, Asia's largest river island in upper Assam's Jorhat district.

It is also reported that several animals including about 10 deers have lost their lives due to the flood water in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Yesterday, the flood water had submerged around 80 percent of KNP. The official sources have said that two rhinos and a few deers have drowned. The Park authorities’ have shifted many animals to safer places.The government has set up 768 relief camps across the affected districts.

Meanwhile,Congress President Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit Assam tomorrow.
