Mary Kom to be made Lieutenant Colonel


The five-time World Champion boxer MC Mary Kom from Manipur will be conferred with the title of Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial Army soon.

Abhijit Majumder, Editor and Head of Hindustan Times, Delhi edition in the social networking website Twitter wrote “Mary Kom to be made Lieutenant Colonel. Only after foreign media started writing about her as one of India's finest sportspersons ever.”

Yesterday, Mary have been rated as the 38th most marketable athletes in the world by a monthly British magazine. Mary Kom, who is the lone Indian female boxer to qualify for the London Olympics (LO), is the only athlete from the country other than Dhoni to be featured in the list.

Mary has more than three Asian titles and eleven National titles under her belt. She is a recipient of Arjuna Award, Padma Shri Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and a special award from International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA).
