Almost 12 men died from 2006 to till date due to the pregnancy complications in Pune. The shocking data revealed by the Pune Municipal Corporation in a Right to Information (RTI) reply to activist Vihar Durve on the number of deaths and their causes during the past 10 years.
The civic body, in its shocking and surprising data, states that 4 men died of pregnancy complications in 2006, while the number dropped to 2 in 2007. Two years later, it jumped to 5. In 2011, one male death was reported.
Not just pregnancy complications, the civic body has also mentioned the growing number of cancer cases of female genital organs with only two men dying of the disease in 2007 and 2009, respectively.
However, the problem seems to be more serious in the case of females who are dying of cancers of male genital organs. In 2007, the PMC’s birth and death records show 380 such deaths but the number improved to just one death in 2009.
Calling the data ridiculous, cancer surgeon Anupama Mane said, “I don’t know how the PMC erred in the data. There is something wrong in it.”
PMC Chief Medical Officer Dr ST Pardeshi admitted that there were ‘glaring’ mistakes in the data, and the process of rectifying it is underway.
